There are many diseases a fish can acquire. Recognition of a diseased condition and treatment is often necessary if the fish is to live.
Identifying a healthy fish is very important. Since fish come in different sizes and shapes, a few basic observations can be used to identify a healthy fish. The fins usually stand straight out on a healthy fish. They are not frayed or held close to the body of the fish. Healthy fish have bright clear eyes. Many fish diseases are caused by a multitude of opportunistic pathogens. That is, the disease-causing agent is often already present in the water garden and waits for the opportunity to attack the fish. Healthy fish in quality water are less likely to succumb to an opportunistic pathogen. Prevention is much better than a cure.
Common Fish Diseases
FISH FUNGUS. This is recognized by a brown or off-white cotton woolly-like growth on the fins or body of the fish.
WHITE SPOT DISEASE. This is recognized by a “salt and pepper” appearance of the parasitic white spots of the body of the fish and is called “ICH” The fish will appear often listless and rub against rocks.
BACTERIAL INFECTIONS. Tail rot, skin ulcers and red wounds usually indicate bacterial infection. This is a common disease for goldfish and Koi known as Ulcer Disease. Ulcer disease is a systemic infection caused by a common occurring bacteria found in nature. The infection produces raised boils and small ulcers on the fish.
