The Red Rotala, or Rotala macrandra, is a native aquatic plant of India, thriving in the southern states of Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu. This species flourishes in wetland habitats, often found along streams, in flooded rice fields, on riverbanks, and in temporary ponds. Its remarkable adaptability allows it to grow both submerged and emersed, with growth influenced by light and nutrient availability.

Typically, Red Rotala reaches heights of 12 to 24 inches and can spread up to 12 inches wide, making it a striking addition to aquascapes. Its lush foliage features densely packed leaves that display vibrant green and red hues. To maintain its bushy appearance, regular pruning is essential, as trimming back elongated stems promotes denser growth. Consistent care, including the removal of dead leaves, is vital for preserving water quality and supporting a healthy ecosystem.

For propagation, a 4–6-inch stem cutting should be taken from a healthy plant, ensuring the cut is made just below a node. After stripping the lower leaves to prevent decay, the cutting can be placed in water or a suitable substrate, where roots will typically develop within two to three weeks.
