However, if you desire a fountain or want to include both aquatic plants and animals, deeper water is necessary. The ideal water depth for water gardens varies depending on the type of plants you choose. Bog and shallow-water plants thrive in less than 6 inches of moist soil, while others prefer to be submerged deeper than 6 inches. For water fountains, ground pools should be 8 to 18 inches deep.
