Description

The Azolla floating fern, often called fairy moss, is a tiny, fast-growing aquatic plant that forms a dense, velvety carpet across the surface of ponds and water gardens. Its small scale-shaped leaves create a mesmerizing display of bluish-green foliage, which can turn vibrant crimson during autumn. This floating fern is not only visually striking but also provides ecological benefits, making it a favorite among water garden enthusiasts.

Lush Coverage and Vibrant Color

Azolla floating fern grows rapidly and spreads across the water surface, creating a natural carpet that enhances the beauty of any pond or container garden. Its foliage provides a striking contrast against koi or goldfish, and the crimson hues in autumn add seasonal interest.

Ecological Benefits

One fascinating feature of Azolla is its symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing algae. This algae converts nitrogen from the atmosphere into a usable form, nourishing the fern and enriching the pond ecosystem. By doing so, Azolla contributes to improved water quality while reducing the need for chemical fertilizers.

Adaptable and Resilient

Thriving on available nutrients in the water, Azolla floating fern is highly adaptable and resilient. It grows well in ponds, water gardens, and even slow-moving waterways. It can tolerate various water conditions and temperature ranges, making it an ideal choice for both small container gardens and larger aquatic landscapes.

Benefits for Water Gardens

  • Provides natural shading, helping to reduce algae growth

  • Adds vibrant color and texture to ponds and water gardens

History

The Azolla Event happened 49 million years ago when Earth was hot enough for frogs, turtles, and tropical palm trees to live at the North Pole. It lasted 800,000 years and coincided with the decline in CO2 in the air that fell from abou5 3500 ppm to 650 ppm.

The table below shows the estimated shipping and pick-up weeks for destinations to USA states. These dates can change depending on weather and how strong the plants are at that time.

For example, a wet spring will have many clouds leading to less sunshine. Thus, the plants may need a bit longer to grow strong enough for transplanting and transit. With the planet heating up, a warm spring may help the plants grow strong enough to ship before the dates in this table.
