Overview of This Soft Blue Lotus

The Caerulea water lily is a remarkable aquatic plant with soft blue petals and a golden yellow center. Its elegant blooms and delicate fragrance make it a standout addition to ponds and water gardens. Gardeners value this lily for its beauty, abundant flowers, and historical significance, dating back to ancient Egyptian gardens over 4,000 years ago.

Fragrant Evening Blooms

This lotus produces fragrant flowers that rise gracefully above the water. The soft blue petals paired with a bright yellow center create a visually striking display, while the subtle scent fills the pond area with a calming aroma. These blooms attract attention both visually and through fragrance, making them a favorite in water features.

Historical Inspiration

The Caerulea lily has inspired cultures for centuries. Its blooms were often depicted in Egyptian carvings and artwork, symbolizing purity and rebirth. Growing this lotus brings a touch of history into your garden while offering a stunning focal point.

Growth and Care

This water lily thrives in full sun and warm conditions. Its lily pads shade the water, helping to limit algae growth and provide shelter for fish. Gardeners often pair this soft blue lotus with other water lilies to create a harmonious contrast that highlights its delicate color.

Why Choose This Water Lily

With soft blue petals, golden centers, delicate fragrance, and historical appeal, the Caerulea water lily adds elegance, intrigue, and lasting beauty to any pond. Its reliable blooms and easy care make it a top choice for water garden enthusiasts.

Benefits

It blooms repeatedly from about mid-spring to early fall depending on growing conditions.

Appearance

Flowers: Sky blue blending to an off-white in the center. Long, narrow, pointed petals.
Aromatic. NOTE: We've noticed that the color has been wrongly described by others on the Net.
Stamens: Yellow.
Sepals: Greenish-white on the face and the reverse striped and spotted brown.
Leaves: Light green with brown spots that fade to green in older plants. Underneath they are green with dark-purple mottling.
The fruit of N. caerulea is
surrounded by four sepals and four alternating sepaloid petals, so that
its ovary, though equally poppy-like, remains hidden.

Botanical Name

Nymphaea caerulea also known as Nelumbo maculata

History

The lotus was considered a sacred plant and still is today. In mythology, the Egyptians believed that the water lily was at the creation of the world and had risen from primal waters. The ancient Egyptian god Nefer Tum was depicted in paintings and shown with the Caerulea water lily on his head pointed towards the heavens.
The Egyptian tombs were found with preserved water lilies that are over 4000 years old. Lotus wreaths made with the sky-blue Caerulea flower with its narrow and pointed petals were found in tombs setting on the mummies. The sarcophagus would be packed with these lotuses.

It has been used for hybridizing over a century for many popular Tricker hybrids such as the 1896 'Blue Beauty' Water Lily.

The table below shows the estimated shipping and pick-up weeks for destinations to USA states. These dates can change depending on weather and how strong the plants are at that time.

For example, a wet spring will have many clouds leading to less sunshine. Thus, the plants may need a bit longer to grow strong enough for transplanting and transit. With the planet heating up, a warm spring may help the plants grow strong enough to ship before the dates in this table.
