Doitsu Koi: Scaleless Carp Introduced to Japan in the Early 1900s
Doitsu koi are a distinctive variety of ornamental carp recognized for their smooth, nearly scaleless bodies and bold coloration. Unlike traditional scaled koi, these fish originated from German mirror carp that were selectively bred in Europe to have few or no scales. This characteristic originally made them easier to prepare for cooking, which was the primary goal during their early development.
History of Scaleless German Carp in Japanese Koi Breeding
In the early 1900s, German mirror carp were introduced to Japan, where Japanese breeders immediately saw their ornamental potential. These carp were carefully crossed with native Nishikigoi varieties, laying the foundation for what would become modern Doitsu koi. What makes this lineage especially remarkable is that nearly all examples today can be traced back to just seven German carp imported during that period. Through decades of selective breeding, Japanese koi farmers refined color quality, pattern placement, and body shape.
Depending on the variety, Doitsu koi may be completely scaleless or display a clean row of large, mirror-like scales along the dorsal ridge or lateral line. These limited scale rows often enhance the visual impact of the koi by framing the pattern and allowing colors to appear sharper and more defined. Reds tend to look deeper, whites cleaner, and blacks more dramatic compared to fully scaled varieties.
Another notable trait is their smooth, glossy skin. Without a full covering of scales, light reflects differently across the body, giving these koi a sleek, porcelain-like appearance in clear water. This quality makes them especially eye-catching in ornamental ponds. However, the lack of scales can also make them more sensitive to physical damage and poor water conditions. Consistent filtration, stable water parameters, and proper handling are important for long-term health.
Today, Doitsu koi are highly valued by pond owners and collectors around the world. Their combination of European origins and Japanese refinement gives them a unique place in koi history. Whether chosen for their dramatic patterns, smooth texture, or fascinating background, they remain a standout addition to any koi pond.
The table below shows the estimated shipping and pick-up weeks for destinations to USA states. These dates can change depending on weather and how strong the plants are at that time.
For example, a wet spring will have many clouds leading to less sunshine. Thus, the plants may need a bit longer to grow strong enough for transplanting and transit. With the planet heating up, a warm spring may help the plants grow strong enough to ship before the dates in this table.
