Description
St. Louis Water Lily – Bright Yellow Tropical Blooms for Your Pond
Overview of the St. Louis Water Lily
The St. Louis water lily is a stunning tropical variety with large, star-shaped blossoms. Its brilliant yellow petals surround deeper yellow stamens, creating a radiant display above the water. The lily pads are oval-round, pea green on top with heavy bronze mottling, and lighter underneath. Together, the flowers and foliage bring bold color and texture to any pond or water garden.
Unique Sunshine Blooms
This tropical water lily produces abundant flowers that rise gracefully above the pond surface. The star-shaped blossoms stand out because of their vivid yellow tones and layered petals. In addition, the mottled lily pads enhance the overall beauty of your water garden, creating a dynamic visual display.
Historical Significance
The St. Louis water lily holds a remarkable place in horticultural history. In 1933, George Pring hybridized this variety at the Missouri Botanical Garden, and it became the first water lily to receive a U.S. patent. Moreover, it was the first tropical lily awarded the Henry Shaw Gold Medal at the National Flower Show.
Before 1933, yellow tropical water lilies were virtually unknown. A yellow lily discovered in Africa in 1890 had been lost to cultivation. Then, in 1932, the St. Louis variety was rediscovered. Only one seed germinated at the Missouri Botanical Garden. George Pring crossed it with another variety, producing the vibrant yellow lily we know today.
Distribution and Legacy
The William Tricker Company received exclusive distribution rights for this variety. Consequently, the 1933 William Tricker Catalog introduced the St. Louis water lily to gardeners worldwide. Ever since, it has been celebrated as a rare and iconic yellow tropical water lily.
Why Choose the St. Louis Water Lily
With its radiant yellow blooms, distinctive mottled pads, and rich historical legacy, the St. Louis water lily brings both elegance and intrigue to any pond. Its consistent growth, bold color, and fascinating history make it a standout choice for water garden enthusiasts.
The table below shows the estimated shipping and pick-up weeks for destinations to USA states. These dates can change depending on weather and how strong the plants are at that time.
For example, a wet spring will have many clouds leading to less sunshine. Thus, the plants may need a bit longer to grow strong enough for transplanting and transit. With the planet heating up, a warm spring may help the plants grow strong enough to ship before the dates in this table.
