Description

The ‘Arc-en-Ciel’ hardy water lily stands out as one of the most unusual water lilies available. From the start, gardeners notice this variety for its extraordinary foliage. Unlike traditional lilies, the pads display a deep green base splashed with bronze, white, rose, and purple. As a result, each pad looks completely unique and adds artistic interest to the pond.

In addition, the color pattern continues to evolve as the pads mature. Over time, the tones deepen and shift, which creates a living mosaic across the water’s surface. Because of this, the plant delivers visual appeal even when flowers are not present. Not surprisingly, the name ‘Arc-en-Ciel,’ which means rainbow in French, perfectly describes this striking display.

Beyond the foliage, ‘Arc-en-Ciel’ also produces attractive blooms. Typically, the flowers show soft pink petals with warm yellow centers. Meanwhile, the blooms sit just above the water, adding charm without overwhelming the colorful pads. For example, when paired with green or dark-leaved plants, the flowers offer gentle contrast and balance.

Additionally, this hardy water lily performs well in many pond environments. Whether placed in a small backyard pond or a larger water feature, it adapts easily. When planted correctly, it establishes quickly and grows at a steady pace throughout the season. As a hardy variety, it returns reliably each year, even in cooler climates.

Moreover, ‘Arc-en-Ciel’ supports a healthier pond ecosystem. The wide pads shade the water’s surface and help limit sunlight penetration. Consequently, algae growth decreases and water temperatures remain more stable. At the same time, fish benefit from added cover and protection beneath the leaves.

Finally, ‘Arc-en-Ciel’ offers something truly unique for water gardeners who want more than a standard lily. Overall, its rainbow-splashed foliage, dependable growth, and ornamental blooms create lasting impact. Therefore, this hardy water lily earns its place as one of the most distinctive and admired varieties available today.

History

The water lily was lost to the trade. Tricker's good friend and water lily expert Walter Pagels found this very lily in an obscure place during a visit in Japan. Thanks to Walter we are able to continue to offer such a rare water lily from his finding.

The table below shows the estimated shipping and pick-up weeks for destinations to USA states. These dates can change depending on weather and how strong the plants are at that time.

For example, a wet spring will have many clouds leading to less sunshine. Thus, the plants may need a bit longer to grow strong enough for transplanting and transit. With the planet heating up, a warm spring may help the plants grow strong enough to ship before the dates in this table.
