Description

Black Magic Elephant Ear (Colocasia esculenta ‘Black Magic’) is a frost-tender perennial prized for its dramatic foliage and tropical appearance. Gardeners value this plant for its large, heart-shaped leaves that can reach up to two feet long. The leaves display a rich purple-black color that deepens in full sun and creates striking contrast against green aquatic plants.

Black Magic Elephant Ear for Water Gardens and Containers

This plant thrives in wet, boggy conditions and performs exceptionally well near ponds, streams, and water features. It also adapts well to large containers when kept consistently moist. Many water gardeners use it along pond edges to add height, texture, and bold color to their designs.

Black Magic Elephant Ear grows between three and six feet tall under ideal conditions. Thick burgundy stems support the massive foliage and help the plant maintain its upright form. Although it may occasionally produce yellowish-white flowers, gardeners grow this plant mainly for its foliage rather than its blooms.

Full sun encourages the darkest leaf color, but partial shade also works well, especially in hotter climates. Rich soil and regular feeding support strong growth and large leaves. Because this plant has high water and nutrient needs, steady moisture plays a key role in its success.

Colocasia esculenta belongs to the arum family and is commonly known as taro or elephant ear. In some regions, growers cultivate related varieties as a food crop, particularly in Hawaii, where taro tubers produce poi. Ornamental forms like ‘Black Magic’ focus on visual impact rather than harvest.

In water garden design, Black Magic Elephant Ear pairs well with flowering pond plants, floating vegetation, and ornamental grasses. Its dark foliage provides contrast and depth, helping brighter plants stand out. Used as a focal point or backdrop, it brings a lush, tropical feel to any aquatic setting.

The table below shows the estimated shipping and pick-up weeks for destinations to USA states. These dates can change depending on weather and how strong the plants are at that time.

For example, a wet spring will have many clouds leading to less sunshine. Thus, the plants may need a bit longer to grow strong enough for transplanting and transit. With the planet heating up, a warm spring may help the plants grow strong enough to ship before the dates in this table.
