Mystery Snails

Item # 33-7097-1

Mystery Snails, freshwater snails, are desired because they are easy to care for and have a quiet temperament. They come in an array of colors to brighten up your tank.

They consume algae and left over fish food that can foul a water garden pool or aquarium making them a good cleaner.

Their attractive appearance resembles the common “trapdoor snail” in size and appearance. The cute pink eggs are laid above the water’s surface on plants or grass. They are not hermaphroditic so you don’t have to be concerned about them reproducing beyond control.

Description

Mystery Snails are one of the better scavengers for warm water pools and aquariums. They help to keep the water clean by eating algae and fish food. With a charming appearance like trapdoor snails, their cute pink eggs are laid on plants or grass above the water, so ensure to have above-water plants if you want to propagate these snails.

Botanical Name

Ampullaria

Preferred Growing Conditions

Fresh water.
Water temperature between 68°F and 82° F (around room temp).
pH 7.6 – 8.4 is best.
Avoid sudden changes in the environment, such as temperature or pH.
Calcium in the water enhances their growth. Adding high-calcium plants or add calcium supplements to the water.
They consume plant material at the bottom. Go ahead and feed them the vegetables that you eat.
Their lifespan is about a year, so breeding them is recommended. You'll need a male and female. Males have a penis sheath on the inside of their right shoulder that you can see. Their "poop chute" can be confused for their penis sheath. The penis sheath is often mistaken for their air siphon on their left shoulder. Carefully turn them over to look.

This table shows the estimated shipping and pick-up weeks for destinations to USA states. These dates can change depending on weather and how strong the plants are at that time.

For example, a wet spring will have many clouds leading to less sunshine. Thus, the plants may need a bit longer to grow strong enough for transplanting and transit. With the planet heating up, a warm spring may help the plants grow strong enough to ship before the dates in this table.
