‘Azolla’ Aquatic Plant – Good for the Planet

Azolla is a very small floating fern plant, often called fairy moss, with tiny scale-shaped leaves. It forms a lush, velvety carpet on the water’s surface, displaying a mesmerizing bluish-green hue or a vibrant crimson foliage during autumn.

One fascinating aspect of Azolla is its symbiotic relationship with algae, which provides the plant with nitrogen from the atmosphere as nourishment.

Thriving on the nutrients present in the water, Azolla showcases its adaptability and resilience.

Description

An interesting characteristic of Azolla is that it has a mutual living relationship with alga that fixes nitrogen from the atmosphere for the tiny plant as food. Azolla gets a reddish color in the fall when the sunlight is limited and the green chlorophyll dies off or when it has a little deficiency in nutrients.

Benefits

Fish & livestock food.
Carbon capture and nitrogen fixing capabilities are good for reducing carbon dioxide and methane in the atmosphere.
Azolla acts as a natural deterrent for mosquitoes because it covers the water's surface making it an unfavorable breeding ground for these pests.

Appearance

Leaves: Bright green and scale like. Might turn rusty red in fall or with bright sunlight.

Size

Leaves are less than 1/4" long.

Preferred Growing Conditions

2+ hrs/day direct sunlight.
As the sunlight diminishes or when there is a slight nutrient deficiency, Azolla takes on a reddish color.

Botanical Name

Azolla
Also called mosquito fern, water fern, and fairy moss.

History

The Azolla Event happened 49 million years ago when Earth was hot enough for frogs, turtles, and tropical palm trees to live at the North Pole. It lasted 800,000 years and coincided with the decline in CO2 in the air that fell from abou5 3500 ppm to 650 ppm.

The table below shows the estimated shipping and pick-up weeks for destinations to USA states. These dates can change depending on weather and how strong the plants are at that time.

For example, a wet spring will have many clouds leading to less sunshine. Thus, the plants may need a bit longer to grow strong enough for transplanting and transit. With the planet heating up, a warm spring may help the plants grow strong enough to ship before the dates in this table.
